Being a Family Man, or not?

As a teenager, a song influenced my concept of a family man; this anthem ridiculed the stereotype. It was the last stigma that I never wanted to be associated with. Wow, ideas really matter, at least this belief characterized my rebellious tendency to go against the grain.

When I became a man I put away childish things. After a few years of rethinking the idea it began to grow on me and even became a very natural wish to have a family. Now with a wife and four children I have proved to embrace my place and become even more aware of my influence and responsibility. Being a husband and dad can be both very rewarding and challenging. Once I made up my mind to be a family man I found the support, materials and friendships that strengthen my call in life.

Can anyone really measure how much love a dad has for his family? If so, what does it look like? And, How do I do a good job at it? These questions have often come up, as I ask myself - am I failing at this family business? The odds seem overwhelming, as I plan to keep my family together. Imagine how many men have tried and failed at this task. I identify with my family and cultivate my love for them. I believe that this will cause me to make successful attempts to become a winner as a family man.

I am writing under the alias as ‘familyman’ since this is my goal and may not totally characterize my every action. It is a tribute to those who have succeeded in being a positive influence in their family and kept it together. I plan to summarize the principals that I have gleaned from those who have walked this road and overcome the many obstacles. To all who dads, husbands and men who wish to be known as a family man I salute you!
